Domain Name System (DNS)

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical and distributed naming service that translates human-readable domain names (like www.example.com) into numerical IP addresses (like 93.184.216.34) that computers use to identify each other on the internet. It has been an essential component of the internet’s functionality since 1985.

Often compared to a phone book for the internet, DNS allows users to access websites and other resources by entering a domain name, which is then translated into the IP address of the server hosting the resource. This system delegates the responsibility of assigning domain names and mapping them to internet resources by designating authoritative name servers for each domain, providing a distributed and fault-tolerant service.
