Nginx

Nginx (pronounced “engine x”) is a free and open-source web server software that can also function as a reverse proxy, load balancer, mail proxy, and HTTP cache. It was developed by Igor Sysoev and first publicly released in 2004. Nginx is known for its high performance, low resource utilization, and flexibility.

It is widely used across the internet, with a significant percentage of the top websites utilizing it, often as a load balancer. Nginx was initially created to address the C10k problem and to meet the demands of high-traffic websites, such as the Russian search engine Rambler.

The software is released under the 2-clause BSD license. A company named Nginx, Inc. was founded in 2011 to provide commercial support and a paid software version called NGINX Plus. In March 2019, F5 Networks acquired Nginx, Inc. for $670 million.
