GnuPG (GPG)

GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG or GPG) is a free-software replacement for Symantec’s cryptographic software suite PGP. It is a complete and free implementation of the OpenPGP standard, defined by RFC 4880. GnuPG allows users to encrypt and sign their data and communications, and it includes a versatile key management system. It is a command-line tool designed for easy integration with other applications, and many frontend applications and libraries are available. GnuPG also supports S/MIME and Secure Shell (ssh).

GnuPG was initially developed by Werner Koch, with the first production version released on September 7, 1999. The German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology provided significant funding for its development, including documentation and a port to Microsoft Windows in 2000. GnuPG is part of the GNU Project and is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License, allowing it to be freely used, modified, and distributed.

GnuPG is a hybrid-encryption software program, utilizing both conventional symmetric-key cryptography for speed and public-key cryptography for secure key exchange. It encrypts messages using asymmetric key pairs generated by GnuPG users.
